English duo target $10m prize at FedEx Cup

Justin Rose’s superb victory in the BMW Championship has given him an excellent chance of scooping the $10m prize for the winner of the FedEx Cup. With Luke Donald also at the right end of the points list, we take a look at who might come away with the biggest purse in golf following this week’s the Tour Championship.

Winning a major remains the goal of every professional golfer but if they fail to achieve that target, then winning £10million is not a bad substitute. That is eaxctly what is on offer for the player who finishes with the most FedEx Cup points after this week’s Tour Championship in Atlanta.

The field has now been cut to just the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings and any one of the remaining stars can win the top prize, as the points totals have been reset following the third event, although the top five are in pole position.

Webb Simpson (13/2 Top American – Tour Championship) tops the list and has been given 2,500 points going into the season finale, while number two ranked Dustin Johnson receives the same number of points.

Rose’s victory in Chicago has seen him jump 31 places and he is ranked third, with 2,000 points heading to Atlanta, with fellow Englishman Donald (Donald 13/2 Tour Championship Outright) a place back on 1,800 points.

US star Matt Kuchar competes the top five and he will begin the Tour Championship with 1,600 points to his name and such is the way that the tournament is structured, if any of the top five win at East Lake Golf Club this week they will be crowned as the Fedex Cup champion and take the £6.2million on offer.

Organisers have made sure that any of the 30 players can finish first in the standings, with Bo Van Pelt the lucky man to sneak into the event as the 30th-ranked player.

He would need to win the tournament and hope that the top five finished down the leaderboard to walk away with the £10million, as he needs to make up 3,642 points on both Simpson and Johnson.

Nick Watney and Jason Day (100/30 Top Four Finish – Tour Championship) are both inside the top 10 and have enjoyed stellar seasons and must be considered good bets to put in a solid display when it matters, while Steve Stricker, currently12th in the rankings, is likely to make a move later this week.

Phil Mickelson has not enjoyed his best season but sits in 14th spot and has an outside chance of glory, while a resurgent Adam Scott, at 19th, may be a dark horse to scoop the pot.

So what of Rose and Donald who are, along with Fredrik Jacobson, the only remaining Europeans in the event, after Scotland’s Martin Laird finished agonisingly just one place outside the top 30.

Rose looked in the form of his life when winning on Sunday and admits himself that he is as mentally tough as he has ever been, and it would be no surprise to see him repeat the dose and claim the spoils on Sunday.

Donald has been the model of consistency this year and is rightly ranked as the number one golfer in the world. He has yet to convince some pundits, however, who feel that he should not be considered the top dog until he has won a major and victory in the FedEx Cup finale might go some way to silencing the doubters.

He has the game and the temperament to win the event as he is rarely out of the top 10 and is on target to head both the US and European money lists at the conclusion of the season.

European and British golf in particular has never been as strong as it is right now and it would be a fitting way to end a great season if either Donald or Rose hit the jackpot on Sunday.
