Nfl Football Betting Odds Explained,How to Bet on NFL Football

The NFL offers a number of interesting and exciting ways to place your money on a game, with the three common odds systems used in the NFL being: the money line, the point spread and the total point over/under wager.

Learning to interpret and use the odds presented in each when placing your wagers can be key to your success in NFL betting.

The Money Line

The money line is a simple wager on which team you feel is most likely to win in a particular game.

Unlike point spreads, there is no additional handicapping that is done on the actual game itself in determining which team may be the winner.

Simply put, if a team wins the match and you have a wager on them, you win the bet.

In order to realize a return on your money, however, you must also determine which team would be most worthwhile to place your money on.

Favored teams typically have a negative number attributed to them (such as -200) while underdogs have a positive value (+170, for example).

Using these two numbers, you would need to place a $200 bet on a favored team to realize a net gain of $100, whereas a $100 bet on an underdog would net $170.

These wager differences were determined in order to encourage wagering on both sides of the money line, but bear in mind that underdogs have no additional help in regards to their score in a money line wager, which is not the case in a point spread.

Point Spreads

As mentioned above, point spreads offer handicapping for underdogs in a game in order to allow for fairer betting to be done across the board.

A team that is favored to win is generally given a negative point value (such as -21) whereas an underdog may be given a positive point value (such as +18).

This means that if you were to place a wager on a game favorite in order to realize a return on your wager, the team must win by more than 21 points over the underdog for the wager to be successful.

Conversely, if an underdog comes within 18 points of the favored team even if they lose, a wager on them would be successful, meaning you would earn money, regardless of the outcome of the game, thanks to point handicapping.

Total Point

Last but not least, a total point wager is a bet that the total points of a game for both teams will be over or under a set value.

Many times, this is set at around 44 points for a game, though this can be adjusted depending on the competitiveness of each particular team and how many points are expected to be scored throughout the course of play.

As with the money line, a wager on a total point over/under bet generally requires more money initially in order to realize a smaller return, but comparatively, this is less of an issue, as rates are generally as low as $110 for a $100 net return.
