TOTE BETTING - TOTE BETS RULES.

Tote Pool betting is basically collecting a sum of money from punters and sharing out equally the winnings between those who selected the correct result - less the operating costs deducted by the Tote.

Tote betting is a great medium for punters if the volumes of bets are large - but the tote dividends are often pretty pathetic on many occasions.

Bear in mind that the Tote has to make a profit,and they will take out their percentage before declaring a dividend for their customers.

What do the Tote deduct from your bets ?

Thats a good question,but just scoured the Totesport website,used their search facility,but no details can be found.

From past newspaper articles and memory,they deduct different amounts from different bets - typically 17 % for singles and places,an up to 27 % from more popular bets like Placepots and Scoop 6.

So,you are paying much more with Tote bets than you ever paid betting tax in the past with bookmakers,which peaked at 9%,and now of course abolished altogether.

As said before,the Tote is a great betting medium for Jackpot bets,but be very aware that any large bet into a small betting pool will greatly reduce your own winnings.

A warning is given for bets listed below to avoid if you bet heavily.

Dividends declared by the Tote are usually to a £1 stake.

However the Scoop 6 and Super 7 bets are declared to a £2 unit.

TOTE WIN SINGLE

As long as there are 2 runners you can back one to win.

If your selection is a non runner the bet is void and money returned.

TOTE PLACE SINGLE

For this bet there must be at least 5 or more runners.

To win this bet the selection must...

Finish first or second in all races of 5 to 7 runners.

Finish in first 3 on all races with 8 or more runners.

Handicap Races are treated differently - if the horse finishes in FIRST FOUR of any race with 16 or more runners you also collect.

If your selection is a non runner the bet is void and money returned.

TOTE EXACTA

This is a Tote bet where you forecast the first 2 past the post in a race - in the correct order.

You can reverse the selections making 2 individual straight forecasts.

Combinations are also accepted for Tote Exacta bets,and for example pick 3 horses and combine them for 6 bets.

Combination examples

3 choices - 6 bets.

4 choices - 12 bets

If you have any non runners in this bet,a single Tote Exacta will be void and money returned.

Combinations will be part returned - for example - 3 choices with a non runner will leave just 2 bets(1 reversed exacta),so 4 bets are void and returned.

TOTE TRIFECTA

This is getting harder - you now have to predict the first 3 home in a race - in the correct order.

The Tote Trifecta is only for selected races with 8 plus runners.

Its almost impossible to win this bet with one straight bet,and combinations are the only way to win.

Combination examples

3 choices - 6 bets.

4 choices - 24 bets.

For bigger combinations multiply the number of trebles by 6 to get number of bets.

Don't worry too much if you don't know the number of bets - when you bet online,the betslip will calculate the number of bets before you confirm the wager.

If you have combination Tote Trifecta all non runners are void and that proportion of bet is returned and those bets left still stand.

TOTE SWINGER

This is a popular Tote bet in countries that do not have betting shops,and a limited choice of betting opportunities.

That does not apply in the U.K.and most other countries now thanks to internet accounts being available worldwide.

However it was introduced in the U.K.and has not really taken off.

Another disadvantage of this bet is getting the dividends - they are too cumbersome for teletext and newspapers to publish.

The bet itself...

The Tote Swinger is a forecast bet that pays you for any 2 horses placed in the first 3 home in any race of 6 or more runners.

There are 3 dividends for every race - 1st & 2nd,1st & 3rd,and 2nd & 3rd.

You can have as many selections as you want from just 2 which is one bet.

If you have 3 selections it is 3 bets,and 4 selections is 6 bets.

Again your online bookmaker's betslip will calculate the number of bets as you enter them.

TOTE PLACEPOT

Now we are getting to bets where the Tote excels - small stakes and huge payouts.

For the Tote Placepot you don't even have to pick any winners.

It is a daily bet at all U.K.meetings - always the first 6 races.

As stated,they do not need to win,you just need a placed horse in all six races to win the dividend.

Your selection(s)need to finish in these positions to qualify...

Finish first or second in all races of 5 to 7 runners.

Finish in first 3 on all races with 8 or more runners.

Handicap Races are treated differently - if the horse finishes in FIRST FOUR of any race with 16 or more runners you also qualify.

This is important - all non runners go onto the favourite.

If there are 2 or more(joint) favourites - you go onto the favourite with the highest racecard number.

You can do a straight Tote Placepot with 1 selection each race - 1 bet.

However perms are recommended for the Tote Placepot - remember you can have more than 1 placed in a race,so your final win dividend can be much higher than your unit stake.

If you picked 2 selections each race it would be 64 bets(2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2).

You could then do a 10p perm at a cost of £6.40p.

Then just multiply the number of placed selections you have in each race for your dividend.

Say you get 1 placed in 4 races and 2 placed in the other 2 - just multiply out( 1 x 1 x 1 x 1 x 2 x 2) = 4 winning bets at .10p = 0.40p winning placepot dividend which is declared to £1.

TOTE QUADPOT

Same bet as the Placepot,but this time concerns the 3rd,4th,5th,and 6th races.

Easier to win than the Placepot,the Quadpot has smaller dividends and is less popular,so big bets into this pool is not sensible.

Again non runners are substituted with favourites,declared to £1 unit,and again perms are accepted starting at just 10p.

TOTE JACKPOT

The Tote Jackpot is a daily event in U.K.racing at a selected meeting where the punter has to pick all 6 winners(first 6 races) - they have to win.

Not a bet to play until it is carried over for a week or so - it then amasses huge amounts very quickly as syndicates and jackpot hunters move in.

You can perm selections for this bet,and the dividend is declared for £1.

Remember non runners automatically go onto the favourite(if joint the one with highest racecard number is the favourite you are on).

TOTE SUPER 7

This is similar to Tote Jackpot - only harder to win!.

As title suggests,the Tote Super 7 is a bet on 7 races selected from 2 meetings.

The winner of the full 7 jackpot is very difficult and the jackpot though not popular is always huge because it is rarely won.

As a sweetener to punters this bet pays out for any 5 winners,and any 6 winners - in any order.

Dividends can be high even for 5 winners and again watch out for rollovers to make the bet worthwhile.

This bet is expensive at £2 each bet - and no perms allowed at smaller units.

Non runners are placed onto favourite.

TOTE SCOOP 6

The Tote Scoop 6 was established by Channel 4 as a TV bet for punters every saturday.

The race schedule changes each week and is based around the races shown on Channel 4.

This bet is a success story for the Tote and bonuses and jackpots are growing all the time as punters worldwide participate.

Recently there was a £3 million bonus carried forward,and £1 million plus rollovers are commonplace.

The Tote Scoop 6 comprises of 2 bets - dividend for all 6 winners,and dividend for all 6 placed.

BET SMALL IN THESE TOTE MARKETS

Punters should always bear in mind that when they are betting on the Tote they are pool betting - your own bets are reducing your own winning dividend.

This is not critical for big turnover bets like Scoop 6 or Placepots,but if you are playing win,place,trifectas,exactas or tote swingers then be very careful.

Money bet into those pools is quite small,and can amount on occasions to just a couple of hundred pounds.

So,even relatively small bets can greatly reduce the dividends of those particular bets.

Many of those attractive Tote dividends would not look quite so good if your bet was in the pool !.

Bet sensibly,and adjust your Tote bets to the meeting - you will have plenty of leeway at big race meetings where pools are large,but keep your bets small at weekday(especially A.W.)meetings where interest is minimal.

To confirm,there is no problem with jackpot bets like Scoop 6,Jackpot,Super 7 and Placepots,but be careful with other Tote markets.
