The veteran Scot is bracing himself for an even tougher title race as United look for a 20th league championship having knocked Liverpool off their perch with a 19th success last term.

Ferguson is expecting the usual tussle with Chelsea (9/4) under the guidance of new boss Andre Villas-Boas, while he does not expect Arsenal's (8/1) ongoing fight to keep Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri to keep them out of the running.

Manchester City's (7/2) massive spending power is likely to put them firmly in the frame and, while Liverpool (10/1) have not won a league title since 1990, they enjoyed a renaissance in the second half of last season under legend Kenny Dalglish, who is now spending big money to push them on further.

Ferguson also mentioned Tottenham (40/1) as a possible candidate as he feels Harry Redknapp's men will have the advantage of not being distracted by Champions League football after missing out on a top-four finish (11/4 Top 4 Finish 2011/12) last term.

"We used to talk about a top four, with ourselves, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool," he said.
